*.* A Caution for Critics *.*

As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"

Acts 9:3–4

I am always amazed at how people who claim to be believers can be filled with hate and be so critical and mean-spirited. When we become Christians, we are to be characterized by our love. Sure, we can correct one another and reprove one another. Sure, we are to be careful and discerning. But we can do these things in a loving way.

I have seen believers harshly criticize others and their actions, and meanwhile, they are doing nothing at all for the kingdom of God. They are quick to criticize everyone else's efforts, but they are doing nothing themselves other than critiquing.

As Warren Wiersbe has said, "Impatience with God often leads to impatience with God's people. . . . If we start using the sickles on each other, we will miss the harvest." I have seen Christians divide over minor issues rather than pull together for the sake of the gospel.

The Bible tells the story of a devoutly religious man named Saul who claimed to have belief in God, yet he felt it was his job to eradicate a new sect of believers who followed the one called Jesus from Nazareth. Saul went out of his way to find Christians, and he wasn't satisfied with just arresting those who were in Jerusalem. He obtained extradition orders that allowed him to go as far away as Damascus—140 miles away from Jerusalem—to find more believers to arrest and imprison.

Saul was a religious man, but he was a godless man. He was running from God. He was attacking Christians. He was thinking he would successfully destroy the Christian faith. But he had a surprise in store on the Damascus Road, because little did he realize that he was about to have an encounter with Jesus Christ himself.

*.* Close to the Kingdom *.*

" And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart."
Galatians 6:9

Does it ever seem to you as though God could not save certain people— people you know, but can't imagine their being a follower of Jesus? Here is what we need to remember: No one is beyond the reach of God. Sometimes the people we think are far away from God are closer than we realize.

There might be someone you talk with about your faith who is very pleasant and even nods as you speak. But then he or she says, "Well, I can see that your faith has made you a much happier person. You seem to be full of joy, and I am glad that you have found Jesus."

So you say, "Well, thank you so much. Hey, would you like to come with me to church next Sunday?"

"Uh, no." It was said nicely, but the answer was clearly no.

Then there is that coworker who is always hassling you. It seems as though every Monday, this person has come up with 10 new questions to fire at you and even gets a little angry about it. Or maybe it is your neighbor, your husband or wife, your mother or father, or your son or daughter who is hostile toward your faith. You think, That person is so far from the kingdom of God. Yet the very opposite may be true. The person who is giving you the hardest time might be very close to coming to Christ.

As an old proverb says, "If you throw a rock into a pack of dogs, the one that barks the loudest is the one that got hit." And sometimes the one who protests the most, the one who argues the most with you about your faith is the one who actually is closest to the kingdom of God.

*.* No Room for Prejudice *.*

Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them.
-Acts 8:5

Being an effective communicator of the gospel requires a willingness to reach out to people who are different from you. We tend to want to hang around people who look like us, who talk like us, and who are just like us. But how willing are we to leave our comfort zone and go to a person completely different from us with the message of the gospel?

To put it another way, are we willing to acknowledge that all prejudice is wrong? Everyone needs Jesus, and we need to go without embarrassment and share the gospel with them. We can talk all day about how to do evangelism effectively. We can go to classes on how to share our faith and read books about it. We can memorize a list of conversation-starters that can help turn a conversation toward evangelism. All these things are good. But none of them will matter if we don't care about others. People can tell whether or not we care about them. Even a dog can tell. And a person will know whether you are sharing the gospel out of sincerity or a mere sense of duty.

The Bible gives us the example of Philip, who had a heart for unbelievers. Along with Stephen and others, he was called to be a deacon in the church. And when Stephen was martyred and Saul of Tarsus began to attack Christians, where did Philip go? To Samaria. Philip was a Jew, yet he went to Samaria. This was significant, because Jews hated Samaritans, and Samaritans hated Jews. Yet Philip went to these people, people whom Jews normally would not speak to, much less want to reach.

May God give us compassion for people who do not yet know Him. Philip had that, and we should too.

In love,

Yu Fei

*.* A Walk of Faith *.*

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. - Romans 5:1

The Bible tells the story of a man who had everything this world says one should have to feel happy and fulfilled: power, wealth, influence, and fame. But along with that came an emptiness that sent him on a search for God. As secretary of the treasury for a powerful nation, he was second only to the queen. But there was a hole in his heart, so it led him on a search to the spiritual capital of the world, Jerusalem. He did not find what he was looking for, but as he was returning home, he unexpectedly found the answer to his questions. He had an appointment with God that resulted in his conversion and complete transformation.

His story shows what happens when a person becomes a Christian. When someone truly believes in Jesus Christ, his or her life changes dramatically. This man went from emptiness and misery to overflowing joy. His story ends with the statement, "He went on his way rejoicing" (Acts 8:39). It is no exaggeration when the Bible says that we pass from darkness to light, from the power of Satan to the power of God, when we believe in Jesus Christ. It is describing what takes place in our lives.

But we also need to recognize that not every case is identical. There are different types of people who come to faith in different ways. Some have a tremendous emotional response, while others have no emotional experience at all.

An emotional experience has little to do with the reality of a person's conversion. When I prayed and asked Christ to come into my life, I felt nothing. And because of this, I falsely concluded that God had rejected me.

Thankfully, I discovered later that Christianity is a walk of faith and not of feeling.

*.* Chasing Rainbows *.*

Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind. - Ecclesiastes 4:4

One Saturday morning I was up very early because of jet lag, so I went out for a walk. Much to my delight, I saw a beautiful rainbow. I pulled out my phone to snap a quick picture, but the rainbow was barely visible in the photo. The further I walked, the more stunning the rainbow became, so I decided to go home and get my camera. But when I made it back to the spot where

I saw the rainbow at its best, it was gone. I thought, This is why people should not chase rainbows. It can be a metaphor for life. We chase after things that aren't quite there.

When we are young, we think, When I graduate from high school, then I will be complete. So we finally get out of high school, and we think, Now I have to get a job and actually make a living. I'd better get more education. So we further our education. Then we start our careers, and as we begin working, we hope to climb the ladder of success in our chosen profession. Then we start to think, Well, it is a relationship I need. I need to be married. And so we get married, and after awhile, we think, Kids are what I need. After the kids come along, we start dreaming about what it will be like when the kids are grown.

Life just goes on, and we find ourselves chasing rainbows. Then one day we wake up to discover there is more life behind us than there is ahead of us. So don't spend your life chasing after all the things this world has to offer, because you will never find fulfillment on this earth. You will only find it in a relationship with Christ.

In Love,
Yu Fei

*.* How to Be a Blessing *.*

The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself.
-Proverbs 11:25

If you haven't felt the joy of the Lord in your life, if you have been feeling spiritually dry, or if your faith doesn't feel all that real to you right now, then let me ask you something: When is the last time you shared your faith with someone? When is the last time you had a conversation with someone about what you believe?
The Christian life is not meant to be hoarded; it is meant to be shared. You have been blessed to be a blessing to others, not to keep it to yourself. Proverbs 11:25 tells us, "The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself." Do you want a generous soul? It's one area where you don't want to be lean.
Here is what it comes down to: as you start declaring what God has done for you, in some ways it will become more real to you as you make it real to others. As you are taking in truth and growing in your faith, you need to share it with someone else. Every believer needs to do this. It isn't just for pastors or missionaries to do; it is for you. Every one of us needs to look for opportunities to tell others about Jesus.
I can't tell you how many times I have been depleted and drained and felt like I had nothing to offer, but as I began to speak, God gave me the right words to say. I started on empty and ended up on full. Jesus said, "Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. . . . For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you" (Luke 6:38).

Yu Fei

*.* Joy in Serving *.*

Serve the Lord with gladness; come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord, He is God; it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. - Psalm 100:2–3

I want to let you in on a little secret: I think it is fun to serve God. Now, I am not saying that it isn't hard to serve Him. I am not saying that it isn't challenging. I am not saying there aren't times when it is depleting. But I am saying that I derive great joy from it. And by serving God, I don't mean preparing or delivering a message. I mean being used by God in any way that He would see fit to use me. I count it a great privilege to be called by God and to be able to represent Him. And if you have discovered this, then you know what I am talking about. There is a joy in it. And when you serve Him, you sense His blessing on you.

One of my top ten favorite films is the 1981 movie, Chariots of Fire. I loved it. It is the story, among other things, of Eric Liddell, a young runner from Scotland who was a great athlete and competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics. Also a committed Christian, Liddell struggled for quite some time with the decision as to whether he should run or whether he should preach. Ultimately, he went to the mission field. But in the film, there is a scene in which his sister was pressing him to abandon his career in running and start his missionary work immediately. Liddell responded in his classic Scottish brogue, "I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run, I feel His pleasure.

"Do you feel God's pleasure in what you are doing? Are you living your life well? If not, then start today by doing what He has called—and created—you to do.

*.* Start Small *.*

"He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much." - Luke 16:10

I have found that if you want to be used by God, you have to be willing to do the little things first. When I went to Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa and volunteered my services to Pastor Chuck Smith, I was 19 years old (and I did have hair). I said, "Pastor Chuck, I want to be used by God. I will do whatever you want me to do around here." I initially believed that he might ask me to take one of the midweek services and start preaching.

Instead, he said, "I have a man I want you to talk to: Pastor Romaine." Now I didn't know who Pastor Romaine was at that point, but I quickly learned. A former drill sergeant in the Marine Corps, Pastor Romaine seemed to take special delight in whipping young guys like me into shape. My job was to do janitorial work, which involved a lot of sweeping and was strictly on a volunteer basis. I remember thinking, Wait a second! I thought they would let me serve the Lord. And they were.

Effectively, they were saying, "Be faithful in the little things, and if you aren't, then we aren't going to give you anything else to do." So I faithfully went about the tasks they set before me, and in time, they let me do Bible studies, usually in places where no one else wanted to go. I preached in some pretty interesting locations, including mental institutions. I would make hospital calls. I would visit convalescent homes. I would go wherever they allowed me to go. I was anxious to do what I could to serve God.

We have to be willing to do the little things, because we can never be too small for God to use, only too big.

Hey xteam! Let's start serving in small little area first, be WILLING to dirty your hands and wash others feet just like Jesus.

"But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant." - Mat 23:11

In Christ's love,
Yu Fei

*.* They Had Been with Jesus; What about you? *.*

Acts 3–4
So far in the Book of Acts, we have seen the Holy Spirit come upon the disciples, and the first message of the church. In Acts 3, we read of the first miracle of the church and the resulting commotion. It is notable what the religious leaders realized after confronting Peter and the church’s leaders: that “they had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13). There was no doubting what God had done in their lives.

PRACTICAL PRINCIPLES
1. A person who has “been with Jesus” will boldly share their faith. Just months earlier, Peter had denied Christ three times. Now he was boldly declaring the truths of the gospel to a hostile crowd. Having spent time with Jesus, and being filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter was becoming like Christ (see Romans 8:29), stepping out in faith to share the Good News.

2. A person who has “been with Jesus” will be a person who knows Scripture. Peter was a fisherman by trade, uneducated compared to the religious elite. Yet he spoke with a clear grasp and understanding of Scripture. And what is the Bible? It’s our user’s manual for life. To get closer to God, we need to study His Word.

3. A person who has “been with Jesus” will be a person of prayer. After being reprimanded by the religious leaders, what did Peter and John do? They gathered with other believers and prayed (Acts 4:23–31). As a result, they were filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke the Word boldly. When we are close to God, we will want to be in close fellowship with Him through prayer.

4. A person who has “been with Jesus” will be persecuted. When we stand up for our faith, it is a given that people will be bothered by it. Jesus Himself said that we should expect it (John 15:20). Being a Christian is not easy, but true persecution should not make us fold; it should make us stronger in our faith.

RELEVANT REMINDERS
It was a real step of faith for Peter to pull the lame man up to his feet, but God not only blessed it, He gave Peter an opening to preach the gospel. Three things to consider here: Peter saw the opportunity and ran with it; he was bold, preaching Christ and Him crucified; and he challenged the audience, telling them they needed to repent of their sin.

APPLICABLE ACTIONS
When others see you, can they tell that you have “been with Jesus”? Do they see His presence in your life? May the Lord give us the same power that He gave the first-century church so that we too can be bold in our faith and others will say that we have “been with Jesus.”

*.* Unlikely Instruments *.*

Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people.
— Acts 6:8

Stephen, the first martyr of the church, died at an early age. Some might look at the way he died and think, What a waste! But in the words of Jim Elliot, another young martyr for the faith, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose."

What kind of person does God look for to use for His glory? What qualifies a person to be selected by God to be His instrument? Is it a towering intellect or how many PhDs a person has on the wall? Do you have to be physically attractive? Do you need to be a born leader? How about someone who is a little timid? What about the person who isn't the most physically attractive? What about people whom many would classify as ordinary? Is there a place for someone like that?

I would suggest to you there is. Because one of the things that stands out from the pages of Scripture is that God seems to go out of His way to use people whom you'd never imagine He would. And if my life is evidence of anything, it is evidence of that.

So why does God do this? We find the answer in 1 Corinthians 1:27–29:

Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.

God is looking for unexpected people to use for His glory, not ability but availability. Are you willing to be one of them?

Yu Fei

*.* Choose Well *.*

Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult days come, and the years draw near when you say, "I have no pleasure in them."
— Ecclesiastes 12:1

A French proverb says, "Forty is the old age of youth and fifty is the youth of old age." So according to the French, I am still a young person, relatively speaking.

However, my wife and I went to a movie theater the other day, where I noticed they give discounts to seniors. So I asked for one regular and one senior admission, expecting to be questioned about it. But without any hesitation, the young employee just gave me my ticket.

I am at a point in my life called "middle age," which I wouldn't mind so much if I only knew a few more 100-year-olds. When you are middle-aged, you begin to wonder who put the quicksand in the hourglass of time, because your days, months, and years go by so quickly.

So let me ask you, what story is your life telling? My story is a simple one: God can take a mess of a life with the deck stacked against it and redeem it. That is my story. What is yours? We all have a story to tell. And we all need to take stock of our lives and ask, "What is my life all about? What is the legacy that I will leave? How will I be remembered?"

It is really important to not only think of this as you are getting older, but it is also crucial to think about when you are young, because that is when you are charting the course your life will take. That is when you are developing habits and making decisions like the career path you will follow and the person you will marry. You will decide the evening of your life by the morning of it, or the end by the beginning. So make the right choices.

*.* Face the Music *.*

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
— Romans 3:23

Remember the group Milli Vanilli? They enjoyed great success until it was revealed that they did not sing on their own records. Everyone found out that Milli Vanilli didn't really do what they said they did. Milli Vanilli had to face the music.

There is coming a day when we will all have to face the music. The phrase, "face the music," originated in Japan. A man was a part of the Imperial Orchestra, but he could not play a note. But because he was a man of great influence and wealth, he demanded a place in the group, because he wanted to perform before the emperor. The conductor gave him a seat in the second row of the orchestra, and he was given a little flute. During each concert, he would raise his instrument, pucker his lips, and move his fingers as though he were playing. But he never made a sound.

This deception went on for two years until a new conductor took over and wanted to personally audition every player. One by one, the musicians performed in his presence. Then came the flautist's turn, and he had to admit he was a fake. He couldn't "face the music."

None of us can live this life perfectly and flawlessly. All of us will fall short of God's glory, time and time again. But there is a difference between a person who seeks to live a godly life, but has their human failures and weaknesses, and a person who tries to appear to be more spiritual than he or she really is.

It has been said that you can fool all of the people some of the time, you can fool some of the people all of the time, but you can't fool God any of the time.

*.* Wheat and Tares *.*

Here is another story Jesus told: "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a farmer who planted good seed in his field. But that night as the workers slept, his enemy came and planted weeds among the wheat.— Matthew 13:24–25

Jesus told a story known as the parable of the wheat and tares. In this particular story, He talked about a farmer who planted a crop of wheat. And during the night his enemy, probably a competitor, came along and sowed tares, or weeds, among the wheat.

The tare that Jesus described in this parable was also known as the darnel seed, which looks almost exactly like wheat in the beginning stages of its growth. But after it grows a little more, it becomes evident that it is a weed, and it actually uproots the wheat.

When one of the farmer's workers asked him, "Shall we pull out the weeds?" the farmer replied, "No, you'll hurt the wheat if you do. Let both grow together until the harvest. Then I will tell the harvesters to sort out the weeds and burn them and to put the wheat in the barn.

"Jesus told this story to point out that there are people in the church who have infiltrated our ranks. While there is wheat, there are also tares. We don't know who is who, necessarily. You will find them sitting side by side in a pew, breathing the same air, and singing the same songs. One may be a believer, while the other may be an unbeliever. One may be wheat, and one may be a tare.

We always will have people who infiltrate our ranks, the Ananiases and Sapphiras and the Judas Iscariots—the satanic plants that undermine the Word of God. But it is not our job to weed those people out. We don't see a person's heart. Our concern should not be who the hypocrites are, but whether we are hypocrites ourselves. Our job is to take care of ourselves, to take heed and make sure that we are true believers.

Yu Fei

*.* No Pretending *.*

Then Peter said, "Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself.
— Acts 5:3

Acts 5 tells the story of Ananias and Sapphira, a husband and wife who lied to the Holy Spirit. By lying to the Holy Spirit, they were pretending to be something they were not. Ananias and Sapphira wanted others to think they were more devoted to God than they really were.

Ironically, the name Ananias means "God is gracious," but Ananias also found out that God is holy. Sapphira means "beautiful," but she found out how ugly sin can be.

At this time the church was living together communally, because there was a lot of persecution against believers. Some had lost their homes and their income, so other believers who had resources and means were helping out. Everyone had the option of doing whatever God led them to do, and some were selling properties and giving the money to the church. Ananias and Sapphira sold a piece of property, but they acted as though they gave more of the money to God than they really did. The issue here was not about giving or not giving; the issue was lying—saying they did one thing when they really did another.

This is what Jesus warned about: "Watch out! Don't do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven. . . . Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you" (Matthew 6:1, 4).

We have all done this. We have all tried to appear more spiritual than we really are. But it is better to be a sinner and admit it than to pretend to be something you are really not. This was Ananias and Sapphira's problem. They were actors, hypocrites. They put on a show, and no one bought it—especially God.
